The legend of Zelda followed the adventures of the hero Link as he defended the kingdom of Hyrule from an evil wizard named Ganon.
Most episodes consisted of Ganon either attempting to capture the Triforce of Wisdom or use another method to conquer Hyrule.
Link is in some episodes assisted and accompanied by a fairy-princess, Sprite.
A common running joke of the series was Link's repeated failure to convince the princess that he deserved a kiss for his heroic deeds; whenever it seemed they were going to kiss, something bad would happen.
Link usually met obstinate rejection with his sarcastic catchphrase, "Well! Excuuuuuse me, Princess!"
The cartoon was made into an animated series as a "show within a show" in the semi-live-action Super Mario Bros.
Super Show TV series produced by DiC and distributed by Viacom Enterprises. The animated Zelda shorts were aired each Friday, instead of the usual Super Mario Bros. cartoon that aired during the rest of the week.
The series loosely followed the NES Zelda games, mixing settings and characters from those games with original creations.
Thirteen animated Zelda shorts were featured within the show's 65-episode run.
The show's incarnations of Link and Zelda also appeared in various episodes of Captain N: The Game Master during its second season.
